2011 Mustang GT - More Specs

We reported last week that the current Mustang will receive a well-deserved (and also long expected) gift from Ford, at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. We are talking about the new 412 HP, 529 Nm (390 pounds-feet) 5.0 liter V8 engine, destined for the GT version.

This will put to sleep (in the veterinarian meaning) the current 315 HP 4.6 liter V8. Actually, we think the latter should be carefully packaged, sent to a museum and put on display in a room with stuff from a few decades ago.

The new unit will come with 4 valves per cylinder and Ford’s latest twin independent variable valve timing. A forged steel crankshaft, tuned exhaust headers together with high performance pistons and connecting rods will complete the update’s list.

And there’s more: the engine will be mated to either a 6 speed automatic or a six speed manual transmission. Even the fuel economy figure seems to be coming from a fairy tale: 25 mpg. We suspect it’s actually exclusively highway sourced.

We’re so glad the Mustang’s power units (the entry level one is now a 305 HP 3.7 litre V6) have finally been brought to contemporary standards. That’s because the car has to live up to a humongous reputation, it has to fulfill enthusiast’s dreams all around the world. We only wish a proper sport suspension would come in standard. And while we’re at it, could you please not raise the price Santa?
