Nissan NA Offers $100,000+ for Haiti Relief

The second automotive player to announce its support for the worldwide effort still being planned, but not quite implemented, aimed at helping Haiti emerge from the rubble is the American division of Japanese carmaker Nissan, who announced a $100,000 donation for several humanitarian organizations.

"Recovery in Haiti will be very difficult and will take years to accomplish after a disaster of this magnitude," Scott Becker, senior vice president, Administration and Finance, Nissan North America. "We want to do our part immediately and in the future to help those affected by the earthquake in a time of critical need."

The money comes from Nissan North America ($25,000 cash), Nissan Canada ($5,000 cash) and dollar-for-dollar gift matching employee donations ($50,000). An extra $30,000 will be given by Nissan to the Red Cross.

Following the biggest earthquake which hit Haiti in the last 200 years, the island is on its knees, with the latest estimates pointing to a death toll, now estimated at 50,000, may exceed in the end 100,000.

"It's the worst I've ever seen," Bob Poff, Salvation Army director of disaster services was quoted as saying by CNN. "It's so much devastation in a concentrated area. It's going to take days, or weeks, to dig out."

The international community scrambled throughout yesterday to reach out and help what is considered the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere. The US, China, and EU are sending search and rescue teams, medical aid, food and water for the some 3,000,000 people affected by the quake.
