GM May Close Opel's Bochum Plant By the End of 2014, Not 2016

The situation over at GM's European arm, Opel, seems to be really bleak. The American giant is now pressuring Opel to speed up the application of cost-cutting measures, and this may bring about the closing of the Bochum plant two years earlier than originally planned, in 2016.
According to GM Vice Chairman, Stephen Grisky, "The situation in the entire European (car) market is still catastrophic [ . . . ] It is unrealistic and delusional to think that the European market will recover quickly."

He said that production of the Zafira Tourer MPV would be stopped by the end of 2014, and not 2016 as it was originally announced. Not even the proposed building of the Mokka crossover at the plant would not make executives budge from their decision to close up shop.

Still, it is not all set in stone, and Opel has until February to come up with a better plan, or things get the go-ahead as they are. If the plant does close, some 3,000 workers will be sent home, and production of the Zafira Tourer will have to be moved elsewhere. Meanwhile, other automakers on the continent, like VW, don`t seem to be affected that much by the financial situation.
