Hyundai Motor America just issued a recall for three Genesis models over low-pressure fuel pump assemblies that may contain shoddy impellers. A grand total of 19,272 vehicles are called back, split between the G80 sedan, GV80 SUV, and GV70.
Hyundai's North American division became aware of this problem a year ago by means of a warranty claim alleging both stalling and hesitation conditions. Analysis of the fuel pump started a month later, and through May 2024, the South Korean automaker's engineers finished inspecting four more failed fuel pumps.
Every single one of them was subjected to computed tomography scans, which revealed interference between the impeller and housing. Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea immediately contacted the supplier of said fuel pumps. Hyundam Industrial of South Korea told Hyundai that a certain lot may have been produced with insufficient impeller material.
These low-pressure fuel pumps were ultimately fitted to vehicles produced between June 2021 and December 2021. According to Hyundai, no fewer than 879 unique incidents with receipt dates from July 2021 through August 2023 are related to the subject condition, all of them from the US market.
Thankfully for everyone, HMA isn't aware of any fires or crashes related to said issue. Filed with the federal watchdog, the document attached below lists three different part numbers for the fuel pump assemblies of the G80, GV80, and smaller GV70.
This report also notes that Hyundam Industrial remedied the insufficient impeller material condition back on January 1, 2022. Impeller deformation occurs at high ambient temperatures, leading to mechanical resistance that could result in the fuel pump shutting down when the vehicle is operated.
An estimated 1,897 examples of the 2021 to 2022 model year G80 sedan are potentially affected, along with 7,283 units of the 2021 to 2022 model year GV80 and 10,092 units of the 2022 model year GV70. Production dates range between June 1, 2021 (for the G80) and January 19, 2022 (for the GV70).
Dealers and owners will be notified by Hyundai Motor America no later than November 10, 2023. Dealer techs will replace said fuel pumps at no cost to affected owners, regardless of whether the vehicle is still covered by the automaker's warranty or not.
An E-segment sedan internally referred to as RG3, the second generation of the Genesis G80 rolled out in 2020 for the 2021 model year. It's produced exclusively in South Korea at the Ulsan assembly complex where the GV80 and GV70 are made as well. Hyundai's Alabama-based Montgomery plant makes plenty of stuff, including the GV70 Electrified dual-motor sport utility vehicle for the US of A.
The all-electric option boasts a vehicle identification number beginning with 5, signifying that it's made in the United States. The internal combustion-engined GV70 features K, which stands for South Korea.
Pricing for these rear-biased vehicles currently kicks off at $44,900 for the 2024 model year GV70, $57,450 for the GV80, and $54,150 for the G80.
