Mazda seems to be pushing forward with their strategy of improving what they already have, instead of replacing and redesigning everything - the have made an EV, though. According to autonews.com, they plan to make all of their new cars lighter by as much as 100 kilograms (220 lbs), when compared to the models they will be replacing.
As we are sure you know, when it comes to automobiles, less weight is never a bad thing as it gives better fuel efficiency, performance and handling. However, the trend of cars putting on weight has been the norm, in recent years, as increasingly-stringent safety regulations are piling on the pounds on all cars, with stiffer structures and more safety kit, like airbags.

Mazda needs to find a way to maintain a very high body strength for its cars, while keeping the weight down. The only feasible way to do this is to replace steel with lighter and stronger materials. However, this would pus their cars’ cost right up, so they need to find a balance between what is financially possible and efficient and innovative at the same time.
