There were many novelties at the great Auto China 2024 event in Beijing, China. Some of the introductions touched solely the local automotive market, while others had an international scope. Oh, and let's not forget about the small niche of China-focused debuts that everyone wished they were international, too.
One of those models was also the all-new Mazda EZ-6, a rear-wheel drive electric sedan that signals the potential return of the Mazda6 series. For now, it will only be sold in China, also as a plug-in hybrid, thanks to Changan Mazda – and the new mid-sizer uses the same EPA platform as seen in the Changan Deepal SL03 liftback.
Mazda removed the Mazda6 sedan from the US lineup back in 2021 and also sent it into British and Japanese retirement homes last year and just a few months ago, respectively. However, it's still on sale (albeit barely) in places like the Old Continent and some other markets. Plus, it has a steady enthusiast following around the world.
Naturally, many fans were happy to see the potential successor of the aging mind-size model that has been around in its third-generation form since 2012. However, the Mazda EZ-6 has nothing to do with it because of the aforementioned Changan motives, even though they both cater to the same range of customers. Alas, that doesn't mean there are no hopes of seeing it go out to international markets.
To facilitate the option, even the imaginative realm of digital car content creators has decided to chip in on the Mazda EZ-6 matters – and Sugar Chow, the virtual artist better known as sugardesign_1 on social media, has agreed to CGI present his vision for the potential station wagon variant, together with a Changan Deepal SL03 estate model. As always, this pixel master's design projects are very close to potential reality, and this time around, the CGI expert infused the EZ-6 with loads of 'zoom-zoom,' as per Mazda tradition.
Some fans of the author even claimed that it looks better than the original sedan, but we would reserve final judgment until we could see them side-by-side in the real world. Alas, that may never happen – at least not in the West – because this project is a double forbidden fruit. First, because the Mazda EZ-6 may never escape the confines of Asia for a major international career. Secondly, because the wagon version is merely wishful thinking at the moment and also an independent project that has nothing to do with Mazda.
However, let's imagine that Mazda and Changan both hit international venues with these station wagon models. Which one would you choose as your ride partner and why?
