A brand new 2024 Long Wheelbase Range Rover SE is a $113,400 ultra-luxury item that, while undoubtedly competent as an off-roader, will in all likelihood never see terrain more complex or challenging than a grassy field at your local country club. I.e., it's the complete antithesis of what Charles Spencer King, the Range Rover's inventor, wanted it to be in the first place. But what if you want something a bit more authentic? Happily, things used to be very different 30 years ago.
Sure, the Range Rover had already begun its departure from a rugged, bare-bones 4x4 SUV into a luxurious status symbol by 1995. But it can't be argued that Mr. King's trademark philosophy hadn't quite been totally snuffed out by this juncture. Just look at this pristine 1995 Range Rover Long Wheel Base for sale on eBay out of Toms River, New Jersey, if you don't believe us. On first impressions alone, it's clear that classic Range Rovers were very different animals than what they are under the Jaguar/Land Rover, Tata-owned consortium it's built by today.

1995 was the penultimate year for what's commonly referred to as the Range Rover Classic nowadays, a generation of 4x4s built from 1969 all the way until 1996. 1995 was also the final year the Range Rover Classic was offered in a bougie long-wheelbase variant for folks who needed a little extra space for hauling groceries, children, planks of timber, or whatever else a rugged adventuring family might need to haul. As per the official eBay listing, the current owner of this Range Rover LWB bought it off the second owner, who lived somewhere on the exclusive Gold Coast of Southern Connecticut.

Evidently, this clearly affluent second owner poured their heart and soul into this classic Range Rover. With paintwork that still looks factory fresh and a set of OEM alloy wheels shining like the sun, all it took was one round at a detail shop for this 4x4 to look factory fresh again. The trucks also received obligatory state inspections and routine maintenance at that time, something you'll want to take care of when buying a British vehicle. Say what you will positive about old Range Rovers, but a Toyota Land Cruiser, in terms of reliability, they were not.

Still, it takes a bit more of an automotive snob to appreciate the rugged reliability of a Land Cruiser compared to the effortless class and grace of an old Range Rover. This is the kind of vehicle that looks dignified and distinguished, parked right next to a $370,000 2024 Range Rover SV Carmel without looking ugly or old-fashioned in the country club parking lot. As it happens, the current only used this Range Rover as a part-time runabout to get around town as well as to the country club and back. With a buy-now price of $40,000, it is at least a sweet discount compared to a new one.
