In recent years, 7-seat SUVs have gained immense popularity among American families, and it's not hard to see why. These versatile vehicles balance ample seating capacity and the practicality required for daily family life. With a growing number of households opting for larger SUVs over traditional minivans, the importance of interior space cannot be overstated.
Sure, having a burbling V8 under the hood is fun, but plenty of space for each family member to stretch out and relax is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Interior space in 7-seat SUVs allows for customizable seating configurations, providing options to prioritize passenger seating or cargo capacity. Fold-flat rear seats and adjustable middle-row seats enable families to adapt to changing needs, such as hauling oversized items or creating a cozy space for younger passengers.

A spacious 7-seat SUV can easily transition from a family hauler during the week to a recreational vehicle on weekends, capable of transporting sports equipment, camping gear, or other lifestyle essentials.

In other words, with so many options on the market, I decided to compile a list of the most spacious 7-seat SUVs in the American market in 2023 and the ones you could haul the most with.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer L

Passenger volume: 173 cu-ft (4,899 liters)
Maximum interior cargo volume: 112.9 cu-ft (3,197 liters)

The pioneering first generation of the Wagoneer paved the way for the full-size luxury SUV segment, predating even the very concept of the Range Rover. Its remarkable legacy spanned nearly three decades, boasting an almost unchanged body structure and earning the title of one of the longest-produced single-generation cars in American automotive history.

After a hiatus from 1991 to 2021, Jeep finally revived the esteemed Wagoneer nameplate, rejoining the full-size luxury bandwagon it had played a significant role in creating. Presently available in two model lines, the 'Grand' version denotes a better-equipped option, while the 'L' signifies the extended-length model.

The Grand Wagoneer L measures an impressive 226.7 inches (575 cm), which obviously translates into a massive interior for its 7 or 8 occupants or things to haul, with 44.2 cu.-ft. (1,251 liters) of cargo space available just behind the third row.

But the extravagance doesn't end there - the Wagoneer can be equipped with an intercom system, and an interior video camera allows the driver to monitor each passenger's activities on the center display. An astonishing 75 inches of displays adorn the cabin, ensuring a state-of-the-art driving experience for what is essentially a large Jeep.

Under the hood, the second-generation Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer offer a range of powertrain options. Depending on the configuration and trim level, you can find a 5.7-liter mild-hybrid V8, a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8, or the enticing newly developed 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, aptly named 'Hurricane.'

For the Grand Wagoneer L models, the high-output version of the 'Hurricane' engine is standard, boasting an impressive 510 horsepower (517 PS) and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque, more than adequate to propel the almost three-metric-ton Grand Wagoneer L with grace and power.

In terms of pricing, the Grand Wagoneer begins at $88,000, while the Grand Wagoneer L, in the highest available trim level, reaches a little over $100,000.

Regarding passenger and cargo hauling capacities, the Grand Wagoneer L offers a passenger volume of 173 cu-ft (4,899 liters), while the maximum interior cargo volume sits at 112.9 cu-ft (3,197 liters).

Considering its wealth of luxury and performance, one could confidently claim it to be the best bang for buck full-size luxury SUV on the market today.

Lincoln Navigator L

Passenger volume 172.1 (cu-ft) (4,873 liters)
Maximum interior cargo volume: 120.2 cu-ft (3,404 liters)

In 1997, Lincoln embarked on a mission to revive a dormant segment that had laid dormant since the original Jeep Wagoneer exited production at the beginning of the 1990s. The Lincoln Navigator emerged as the first American luxury SUV after the Wagoneer, and much like its predecessor, it shared its roots with a pickup truck platform.

Built on the sturdy foundation of the Ford Expedition, which itself draws inspiration from the venerable Ford F-150, the Navigator benefits from platform sharing that has matured remarkably over the years. No longer plagued by the downsides of past shared platforms, the F-Series now boasts an aluminum-built construction and a plethora of technological advancements that make it light-years ahead of its predecessors.

When introduced at the end of 2017, the current generation of the Navigator marked a revolutionary step forward for Lincoln. Drawing inspiration from the now-defunct Continental sedan, the design language of the Navigator oozes sophistication, complemented by an array of luxurious amenities that can comfortably accommodate up to eight passengers.

Originally, the Navigator faced some criticism for discontinuing its V8 option, but it proved critics wrong by offering a potent twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. Packing an impressive 440 horsepower (446 PS) and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) of torque, mated to a Ford/GM-developed 10-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain has proved to be mightier than its V8 predecessors.

With a starting price of $79,000 and available in both RWD and AWD configurations, the Navigator offers versatility and performance. The all-wheel-drive version is recommended for those seeking optimal traction and control. The range-topping Black Label edition costs nearly $110,000 and treats its passengers to bespoke 22-inch wheels and a generous array of standard luxury features.

For those who crave the biggest interior space, Lincoln offers the Navigator with an extended wheelbase called 'L,' stretching the vehicle to a substantial 221.9 inches (564 cm) in length. This version retains the same trims as the regular model and presents up to 36 cu-ft (1019 liters) of luggage space behind the third row.

Catering to the needs of families and adventurers alike, the Navigator L offers no less than 172.1 cu-ft (4,873 liters) of volume for its passengers and 120.2 cu-ft (3,404 liters) for cargo behind the first row.

Ford Expedition Max

Passenger volume: 172 cu-ft (4,870 liters)
Maximum interior cargo volume: 121.5 cu-ft (3,440 liters)

Unveiled in 1997 as the successor to the Ford Bronco, the Expedition marked a groundbreaking era as Ford's first full-size SUV featuring four doors. Throughout its four generations, the Ford Expedition has remained closely tied to the F-150 full-size pick-up truck, sharing its platform.

In 2018, the fourth-generation Expedition entered the scene, continuing the legacy of its predecessors. Like its two main rivals, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the Expedition is available in both regular and extended lengths, the latter aptly known as the Ford Expedition EL until the 2018 model year, when it became the Max as the fourth generation rolled out. This family-oriented SUV continues to impress with its versatility and ability to accommodate diverse lifestyles.

The Ford Expedition Max emerges as the ultimate family adventurer. A trailblazing extension of the acclaimed Ford Expedition, the Expedition Max caters to those seeking more space and enhanced capabilities. With its generous interior and rugged prowess, the Expedition Max is well-positioned to lead the pack in the full-size SUV category.

Its extended length has allowed it to easily accommodate up to eight passengers and still have room for ample luggage. The current Ford Expedition Max roars to life with a robust 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, available with three levels of power.

The base versions deliver a decent 380 HP (385 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque, while the mid-range models get 400 HP (405 PS) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque. There is also a 440 HP (446 PS) and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) of torque version of the 3.5-liter for the Timberline and Stealth trim levels. No matter the output, this dynamic powertrain is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission made by Ford in cooperation with GM.

The Expedition Max's towing capabilities are equally impressive, making it an ideal companion for weekend getaways or adventurous road trips. When properly equipped, this mighty SUV can tow up to a remarkable 9,300 pounds (4,200 kg), effortlessly hauling boats, trailers, and other recreational vehicles.

Step inside the Ford Expedition Max, and you'll be greeted by a humongous interior, blending practicality with plush seating, ample headroom, and legroom to offer a relaxed experience for its occupants, even on long journeys.

No less than 172 cu-ft (4,870 liters) of space is available for all passengers, while the maximum interior cargo volume is 121.5 cu-ft (3,440 liters) behind the first row.

Chevrolet Tahoe

Passenger volume: 168.3 cu-ft (4,766 liters}
Maximum Interior cargo volume: 122.9 cu-ft (3,480 liters)

There is obviously a reason why the Tahoe has consistently been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, routinely outselling its closest rivals by 2 to 1.

The robust full-size truck-based SUV predates the era when SUVs gained their "cool" status, serving diverse needs ranging from family transportation to commercial and recreational applications.

Under the hood, the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe boasts an array of potent engine options. These encompass a standard 5.3-liter V8 generating 355 HP (360 PS), a 6.2-liter V8 delivering 420 HP (426 PS), and a fuel-efficient 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel, churning out 277 HP and an impressive 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque, a segment-exclusive. Seating arrangements can accommodate between seven and nine passengers, offering versatility to suit various preferences and needs.

Strangely enough, the Tahoe is not the longest SUV on this list by any measure, yet it features one of the most spacious interiors.

Abundant storage capacity is a hallmark of the model, offering 25.5 cubic feet (722 liters) of space behind all three rows, expanding to 72.6 cu-ft (2,056 liters) when the third row is folded, and an impressive 122.9 cu-ft (3,480 liters) with all rear seats stowed. With the convenience of a low-load floor and the option for a power-folding third row, the Tahoe facilitates effortless loading and unloading.

Cadillac Escalade ESV

Passenger volume: 170.4 cu-ft (4,802 liters)
Maximum interior cargo volume: 142.8 cu-ft (4,044 liters)

Now in its fifth generation, the Escalade proudly takes its place as the paragon of its segment and the crown jewel of the entire Cadillac lineup. Within its opulent embrace, an expanse of space and luxurious amenities unfolds, evoking a sense of indulgence that was once unimaginable just a few years ago.

Behind the wheel, the driver is greeted by a captivating 38-inch curved OLED screen dashboard, a testament to the fusion of cutting-edge technology and sophisticated design. Meanwhile, each of the remaining seven passengers finds themselves enveloped in a realm of luxury, surrounded by swathes of sumptuous leather and an array of advanced tech.

Climbing the ladder to the top-tier trim, one encounters the Premium Luxury Platinum designation. While it may bear a somewhat self-explanatory name, it undeniably embodies a level of grandeur and refinement that befits the Cadillac badge. This pinnacle of the Escalade lineup redefines the concept of familial travel, offering a realm of unprecedented comfort and lavishness.

The auditory experience within the Escalade is nothing short of extraordinary, courtesy of an AKG sound system boasting an astonishing 36 speakers thoughtfully positioned throughout the expansive cabin. An integrated intercom system, a marvel of practicality, enables seamless communication between the driver and each passenger, proving invaluable within the cavernous interior.

For those who appreciate more room to carry life's necessities, the extended Escalade ESV steps onto the scene, revealing a remarkable 41.5 cu-ft (1,175 liters) of cargo space behind the third row. In ESV configuration, this prodigious SUV claims the title of the world's longest in its luxury category, ensuring a blend of comfort and utility. The passenger volume available is an astonishing 170.4 cu-ft (4,802 liters).

The heart of the Escalade beats with two distinct engines. The standard offering is a robust 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, commanding 420 HP (426 PS) and an assertive 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque. Power is seamlessly distributed through GM's adept 10-speed automatic transmission. Like the Chevy Tahoe, Cadillac presents an enticing option - a Duramax 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine boasting 277 horsepower (281 PS) and an identical 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque, catering to those with an appetite for enhanced fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL

Passenger volume: 178 cu-ft (5,040 liters)
Maximum interior cargo volume: 144.7 cu-ft (4,098 liters)

Since its inaugural appearance in the 1935 model year, the Chevrolet Suburban has maintained an unbroken presence on the automotive stage, now embracing its twelfth generation. This illustrious tenure has earned it the prestigious distinction of being the longest-serving automobile nameplate globally.

Embarking on its journey as a pioneer of metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the visionary ancestor that paved the path for contemporary full-size SUVs. The Suburban catalyzed a revolutionary evolution within the automotive landscape by merging the graceful physique of a station wagon with the robust underpinnings and potent powertrain of a pickup truck.

Throughout its extensive lineage, the model has found its place under the banners of both Chevrolet and GMC, fostering a remarkable partnership that has endured for most of its existence. Under GMC's stewardship, the model has embraced various distinct monikers, with the nomenclature evolving into the GMC Yukon XL since the dawn of the new millennium in 2000.

For 2023, the Yukon XL and the Suburban can be powered by three different engine options. Just like on the smaller Chevrolet Tahoe, there is a customary 5.3-liter V8, bestowing 355 horsepower (360 PS), a muscular 6.2-liter V8, commanding 420 horsepower (426 PS), and a fuel-savvy 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel, harnessing an energetic 277 horsepower along with an impressive 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque.

Both vehicles are nearly identical from a technical point of view, providing equal interior volume for their passengers and cargo. With that in mind, up to 9 passengers can lavish in no less than 178 cu-ft (5,040 liters) of space, while the maximum interior cargo volume sits at a remarkable 144.7 cu-ft (4,098 liters).
