As we’ve previously reported, the redesigned 2015 Ford F-150 will be launched with a choice of four engine, one of which is the brand new 2.7-liter EcoBoost. Ford says it will deliver mid-range V8 performance with greater efficiency, but has yet to provide any actual figures.
While we’re anxiously waiting for that to happen, Ford brought new four-potter to the 2014 Detroit Auto. However, the new engine is not in a 2015 F-150 as you’d expect, but in Baja 1000 off-road race truck based on the current-generation version. The exact same truck in which the new engine was quietly tested last year.
The 2.7-liter EcoBoost had no reliability issues throughout the race, with only a stock air filter being changed, the Blue Oval revealed earlier this week when the engine was detailed for the first time. It was subjected to more than 1,000 consecutive extreme temperature loops, 900 test hours simulating 240,000 starts and stops and more than 800 hours of towing.
Official performance and efficiency figures for the brand new engine will be announced later this year.
