Sometimes, tradition and heritage are not enough. Sometimes, people will forget the sight of Colin Mcrae or Petter Solberg flying through the air at 100 mph and they will ignore Subaru altogether. But the Japanese are a fighting bunch and they worked hard to bring back the past glory.
Earlier today, a new generation of road-going rally car was born into the world. At the Detroit Auto Show, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI was brought onto onto the stage, fighting the good wight which Mitsubishi seems to have abandoned.
Winged to the teeth, the STI comes packing a new 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine, sending 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Unlike the WRX, this car is for the true driver and won't be available with a CVT. In fact, launch edition models come fitted with a short-throw kit that will later become an option. There will be a thousand of these in all.
Because there aren't that many fans around, Subaru has to carefully coax them into buying this car. So the STI Launch Edition is the only one that combines the WR Blue paint and gold BBS wheels, along with that superior interior trim.
