Ford Motors has managed once again to outperform the general UK market in the sales month of May, ensuring it continues to hold the overall lead. Its market share is up both for the month and for the year to date, compared with 2011.
In May, Ford increased its car sales by 7 percent compared to May 2011, which was below the industry average of 7.9 percent. However, a surge in commercial vehicle demand ensured that the automaker stayed ahead in overall vehicle sales.

For the year to date (end May) total UK car sales were 868,166 up 2.6 per cent compared with 2012, while Ford car sales for this period in 2012 were 126,215 up 5.2 per cent compared with 2011.

The Fiesta remained the overall UK car market leader. Ford Mondeo, Ford S-MAX and Ford Galaxy sales of 2,105, 1,166 and 1,040, respectively, were up from 1,356, 675 and 669 in May 2011.

"The strong sales momentum Ford’s car range through 2012 is now being matched by our commercial vehicles, with the notable recovery in that sector in May. The combination of our best-ever product range of vehicles and an unmatched UK dealer network positions Ford as the clear market leader.  With the new 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in Focus proving a big hit and taking 25 per cent of Focus orders, we are looking forward to even more exciting new product news this year with the launches of the Focus ST, the new Ford B-MAX, and the new Ford Transit,” said Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain managing director.
