Next year we should have a flood of Ford all-electric cars coming our way. With $11.5 billion committed to the new technology, the Blue Oval is trying hard to build the infrastructure required to run its huge fleet of EVs.
In an announcement made on Thursday (October 17), Ford said it partnered with both Electrify America and Amazon to provide future EV buyers all the charging solutions they need. The carmaker also announced some details on the charging solutions it will offer to go with its cars.
Ford EV owners will have access from the get-go to a network of thousands of public chargers spread throughout the country, offering through the FordPass Charging Network access to a total of more than 35,000 plugs, including from Electrify America.
Ford has things covered for those planning to install their own chargers at home, too. The carmaker will sell the Connected Charge Station, which will be installed at the customer’s chosen location by Amazon specialists.
Each electric car sold from next year will come with a Ford Mobile Charger that can run on either 120 or 240 volts. The former provides an estimated 3 miles of range per hour, while the latter juices up the vehicles at a rate of 22 miles of range per hour.
“The fact that most of our customers will plug in at home is a key advantage to an all-electric vehicle,” said in a statement Matt Stover, Ford director of charging, energy services and business development.
“We will deliver a charging experience that is hassle-free whether you’re at home or on-the-go.”
The most anticipated electric car coming from Ford next year is a so-called “Mustang-inspired” SUV that is rumored to be called Mach E. The car is expected to have a range of around 300 miles, the look and power of a muscle car, and all the convenience of an SUV.
