It’s been too long and Ford has been teasing the Mach E too much to even get excited about the 370-mile range confirmed in a recent statement. But more importantly, there’s an asterisk that we should talk about.
Those 600 kilometers or 370 miles of range on a single charge were measured during NEDC phase-out, which means that WLTP fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are being correlated back to NEDC. More to the point, Ford of Europe explains that “there will be some variance to the previous fuel economy and emissions as some elements of the tests have altered i.e., the same vehicle might have different fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.”

Another footnote says that the officially homologated figures will be published closer to the on-sale date, which means the 600 kilometers or 370 miles or range are not accurate. The most you can get from an EV in Europe - for the time being - is the Tesla Model S Long Range, which is good for 610 kilometers (379 miles) under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure.

“While our customers understand some of the benefits of electrified vehicles, we believe that there is a perception gap,” said Darren Palmer. The global product development director of Team Edison should tell Ford to be more accurate with their range before talking about a perception gap, don’t you think? “The capability of EVs has changed significantly recently and hence the need for education to help them in making the switch [to EVs],” added Palmer.

Before the Mach E launches in 2020 in both Europe and North America, the Blue Oval commissioned a survey covering 3,000 people from Europe, the U.S., and China. Nearly 9 in 10 of hybrid and EV owners “agree that electric vehicles are fun to drive,” which goes to show that the survey is off to an optimistic start. Without plenty of charging stations and a lot of range at a relatively affordable price, the EV adoption rate won’t kick into overdrive.
