Ford has just teased the upcoming Mustang Dark Horse R. It will be a track-only beast that, so far, we have only seen in two photo teasers that Ford Performance revealed in the past few months.
The seventh-generation Ford Mustang is probably the last with ICE power before it goes electric. And the carmaker is cashing in on it, coming with more and more road-going and racing versions. It is, after all, the first time in over 21 years that the muscle car receives a performance series. The Dark Horse is the first new performance name that the company has come up with since the Mustang Bullitt was introduced back in 2001 with a 4.6-liter V8 engine.

Over two decades later, the Dark Horse is powered by a modded 5.0-liter V8 that delivers 500 horsepower and is mated to a TREMEC manual transmission, while the ten-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel is available as an option.

The Dark Horse R that Ford is teasing right now is just one of the versions based on the S650 Mustang, that underpins both street-legal and race cars. Customers can order an EcoBoost version, the GT, and the Dark Horse, both in fastback and convertible form. Meanwhile, there are no fewer than six track-only variants, competing in the GT3, GT4, NASCAR, and NHRA Factory. Ford came up with the Dark Horse S, a variant that the company refers to as "for the weekend track day enthusiast." And now here comes the Dark Horse R, with none of them setting wheels on public roads.

Ford released the first teaser of the Mustang Dark Horse R back in September 2022. Now they posted a design sketch on the new social media platform Threads, writing "Threads saw it first!" It was actually the only platform where they shared it.

The R carries over the capabilities of the S, both being based on the street-legal Dark Horse. It will sport a safety cage compliant with the FIA regulations, a race seat, five-point safety belt, and quick-release steering wheel.

The car will be equipped with a fire suppression system and a switch that turns off all electronics in case of a crash or a breakdown.

There will be a central penal that allows the control of the headlights, wipers, and mirrors. An optional passenger seat can be added on board.

The R, just like the S, will come with front and rear tow hooks, hood pins, a modded exhaust system, upgraded brakes, and a massive adjustable rear wing. The car will race using Ford Performance Parts wheels.

Ford revealed the day the Mustang Dark Horse R will make its debut. It will happen on July 27.
