Ford Measures Escape Interior in Ping-Pong Balls

The Mithbusters used ping-pong balls to lift a small ship from the bottom of the ocean, but this is an even strange use for them. Ford is filling up the interior of the brand new Escape SUV with the plastic balls in order to determine the volume, and apparently, 56,778 of them can fit inside the car.
“It probably doesn’t seem like it, but pingpong balls are more accurate than using a tape measure to get the volume of odd-shaped spaces like a glove compartment,” said Eric Jackson, Vehicle Architecture supervisor.

It was found that using measuring tapes was inefficient and time consuming. Often times, two people measuring the same glovebox got different results.

“It was just a quirky idea that came out of a team brainstorm,” says Jackson. “But we then did some studies using pingpong balls and found capacities were more consistently measured.”
