Just a week after the starting prices for the Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid were made public, the British carmaker announced the first deliveries had been made, opening a new era in mobility for the century-old carmaker.
Bentley did not say where these first deliveries were made, as sales kicked off simultaneously in Europe, the UK and the U.S., but no matter the location, the moment is a significant milestone for the brand.
The Bentayga is dubbed by its creator the “world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid” and for Bentley it represents a major step in what is hoped to be the right direction. Without waiting to see how this model performs, Bentley already committed to having electrified variants of all its models by 2023.
“The delivery of the first Bentayga Hybrid models is a historic moment for Bentley, taking us a step closer to the roll-out of truly sustainable luxury mobility solutions,” said in a statement Peter Bosch, Bentley executive in charge with manufacturing.
“As we prepare for the next 100 years, we are investing significantly in new initiatives that reinforce our commitment to sustainability, as demonstrated by the visionary all-electric Bentley EXP 100 GT concept.”
The Bentayga PHEV is powered by a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor. Between the two of them, they develop a combined 443 hp and 700 Nm of torque. Performance figures stand at 5.5 seconds 0 to 62 mph acceleration time and a top speed of 254 kph (158 mph).
The battery fitted on the car allows for this SUV to travel in emissions-free mode for as much as 39 km (24 miles), under WLTP testing. Combined with the distance provided by the internal combustion engine, the car can reach a total range of 747 km (464 miles).
The Bentayga PHEV sells starting from €141,100 in the European Union, £133,100 in the UK, and $160,000 in the U.S.
