Ferrari's Second Stage Blown Diffuser to Debut at Silverstone

Although Ferrari were believed to have debuted their brand new blown rear diffuser along with the other major development on the F10 at Valencia, it has now been reported that the best is yet to come from the Scuderia. Meaning the feature debuted in Spain was simply a first stage of the blown rear diffuser, as a new version will reportedly be fitted onto the F10 this weekend, at Silverstone.

It is reported that the new layout allows a steeper shape of the diffuser, but the downforce advantage will only come when the exhaust fumes are directed through the diffuser,” said a report from GMM, citing Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

According to the same publication, Ferrari's updates two weekends ago were actually part of a multi-step development set up by the Italian team for the upcoming few events. The version to be fitted onto the car at Silverstone will afterwards be improved, as the Scuderia's engineers are now working on a way to prevent the loss of grip resulted from a sporadic airflow caused by the blown diffuser.

Therefore, Ferrari's device it much more complicated than initially reported, and a definitive layout of the rear diffuser (and suspension, consequently) will be ready a few races from now.

Another good news, for Fernando Alonso this time, is that the Spaniard will benefit from a new gearbox at Silverstone. In Valencia, only Felipe Massa's car had a new gearbox, as Alonso's was subject to a four-race mandatory period for its existing transmission. Apart from the new gearbox, Alonso will also have a new suspension configuration for his F10.

The multi-stage development of this entire concept was decided upon by the Italians in order to have it up and running during Alonso's and Massa's 4-race gearbox phase in the ongoing F1 campaign. This way, when the system will be finalized and ready to go, the team would not have to wait until one or both its drivers end their mandatory transmission phase.

In Valencia, we introduced significant updates on the F10 and there will be more in Silverstone and the races after that,” said Alonso prior to this weekend's British GP, which confirms his optimism for the future development of his Ferrari F10.
