In production since 2019, the SF90 celebrates 90 years of Scuderia Ferrari with twin-turbo V8 muscle and three-motor hybrid assistance. Some call it a supercar, but with close to 1,000 horsepower on deck, you may very well describe it as a hypercar.
The Prancing Horse stands high above other Italian automakers in terms of quality, but mistakes can – and will – happen. In the case of the SF90, Maranello’s favorite son issued a recall in March 2023 over the medium-sized passenger seat over concerns in regard to the airbag hitting the child seat. Said recall impacted a grand total of 13 examples of the breed in the United States market.

Fast forward to October 2023, and the Italian automaker issued a considerably larger safety recall. Encompassing 2022 to 2024 models produced between the months of November 2022 and September 2023, the campaign totals 614 vehicles.

As it happens, the turbocharger oil delivery pipe may have been produced incorrectly. This may lead to an oil leak on hot components in the engine bay, increasing the risk of a fire. Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identify the supplier as T.ERRE SRL, a member company of Gruppo Borghi. Specialized in both flexible and rigid pipes, T.ERRE supplied Ferrari with turbocharger oil delivery pipes with notches and reduced thickness.

Those pipes don’t conform with Ferrari’s technical requirements for the SF90. The pipes in question bear part numbers 925718 and 923390 in the parts system. The Italian automaker became aware of the aforementioned notches and reduced thickness during a preproduction review in July 2023. According to the report attached below, the oil pressure warning light and a limited engine performance warning message lit up in the instrument cluster, prompting Ferrari to investigate.

Care to guess which brand-new Ferrari underwent preproduction review in July 2023? That would be the SF90 XX, the swansong to the SF90 series. Both available body styles are sold out, with Ferrari confirming 799 examples of the Stradale and 599 examples of the Spider. They’re priced at 770,000 and 850,000 euros, which means a whopping $815,250 and $899,950 at current exchange rates.

The Prancing Horse instructed the supplier to take corrective measures in September 2023. In the meantime, Ferrari looked over warranty claims, determining that not a single claim was filed with the Italian company for the described issue. Dealers have already been instructed to replace the iffy turbocharger oil delivery pipe at no cost to the customer, while owners will be informed via first-class mail on December 16.

Vehicles assembled after September 19 feature properly manufactured pipes. In the meantime, owners can verify whether their SF90s are recalled by running the VIN on the NHTSA’s website.

The SF90 won’t go the way of the dodo after Ferrari concludes XX production, though. The carparazzi spied its yet-unnamed replacement in August 2023 in the form of a heavily camouflaged prototype with enlarged side air intakes. Given how many things carried over from the 488 Pista to the F8 Tributo, chances are the SF90-replacing hypercar will borrow quite a few bits and pieces from the XX.
