Named after the Formula 1 hybrid V6-powered racecar that gave Sebastian Vettel his last of 53 wins, the SF90 isn't a replacement for the LaFerrari. Codenamed F173, the hybrid V8-powered supercar is the fastest road-going Fezza at Fiorano, lapping the Italian automaker's circuit seven tenths quicker than the KERS-infused LaFerrari.
In production since 2019, the SF90 is available with a track-focused package dubbed Assetto Fiorano. This year, the SF90 XX rolled out with even more go-faster credentials. As opposed to the SF90, the SF90 XX is a special edition limited to 799 coupes and 599 spiders.

Given the arrival of the XX and the model's age, it's only a question of time until Ferrari comes up with a replacement for the SF90. Said heir apparent has been spied by the carparazzi in the form of a chassis mule with a number of interesting details. For example, both side air intakes are visibly larger than those of the SF90 and SF90 XX. There's also a slightly modified air duct up front, and new mounting points for the rear dampers.

Expected to arrive in late 2024 or early 2025, the SF90-replacing supercar isn't likely to sport a brand-new platform. Ferrari has a thing for updating platforms like crazy, and the brand's line of V8 midships is the best example in this regard. Updates are certain to include the plug-in hybrid system as well, along with more oomph for the F154 twin-turbo V8 engine. From a visual standpoint, however, the real thing is expected to differ from the SF90 and SF90 XX in a dramatic fashion.

Think 360 Modena versus the F355. For the time being, only the Prancing Horse of Maranello knows how the succeeding model actually looks. Further expected with more than 1,000 ponies on deck, the successor of the SF90 is certain to break the lap record at Fiorano.

Including a rather steep destination fee of $5,000, the SF90 Stradale currently retails at $518,691 in the United States of America. The SF90 Spider is $569,320 at press time. For the XX, prepare to pony up 770,000 euros or 850,000 euros, respectively. Converted at current exchange rates, that means $833,655 and $920,360.

The problem with the XX, however, is that all of them were spoken before the world premiere in June 2023. As expected from a limited-run model, especially one that also happens to be more powerful than the LaFerrari.

By itself, the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 produces 768 horsepower as opposed to 789 horsepower for the 6.3L naturally-aspirated V12 in the LaFerrari. With hybrid assistance in the form of three electric motors, the SF90 XX levels up to a scarcely believable 1,016 horsepower compared to 950 for the nicer-sounding LaFerrari.

Speaking of which, the Maranello-based automaker is also developing a LaFerrari successor with quite a different character from its forerunner. More akin to a sports prototype racer than a road-going supercar, the F250 sports a hybridized twin-turbo V6 powertrain.
