Designed in Europe primarily for the Old Continent, the fourth-gen Focus rolled out in 2018 on the 20th anniversary of the compact car. Scheduled for a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year, the redesigned Focus won’t differ too much because serious upgrades aren’t of the essence.
173,853 units were sold in 2020 in the European Union and United Kingdom, which is a disappointing volume in comparison to the Volkswagen Golf, the undisputed segment leader. As a whole, year-over-year sales aren’t doing too hot either because of a 26.8-percent contraction.
The Blue Oval knows that it needs utility vehicles to get out of this slump, which is why most of the budget will be focused on this body style rather than hatchbacks and wagons. Alas, the 2022 Ford Focus is likely to feature the same engine options and transmission choices as the outgoing model.
Pictured in the gallery with the Active equipment group, the Focus offers the 1.0-liter EcoBoost as the base engine, with or without mild-hybrid assistance. The most potent version flexes 155 PS or 153 horsepower in British currency, which is more than adequate for a compact-sized hatch.
The rest of the lineup consists of a 1.5-liter EcoBoost that also features three cylinders and a turbocharger, the 1.5-liter EcoBlue, the 2.0-liter EcoBlue, and the 2.3-liter EcoBoost. As far as transmissions are concerned, look forward to a six-speed stick shift plus seven- and eight-speed automatics.
The Active before your eyes is rocking cooler signature lighting for the headlamps and taillamps, five-spoke alloy wheels, redesigned bumpers, and black-painted roof bars to bring the point home. The Active can also be identified by the higher ground clearance (by 30 millimeters or 1.2 inches), plastic cladding around the wheel arches, and the bezels of the fog lamps.
Although the interior remains a mystery for the time being, you can look forward to small updates to the dashboard’s layout, better infotainment, and the same old cheap-feeling plastic Ford loves oh so much.
