Ford is trying to keep up with Tesla in terms of sales in Europe, but for the moment, the mission seems impossible. Furthermore, FoMoCo has to push back the launch of the European Explorer EV. The workforce has already been informed.
The American carmaker unveiled the three-row Ford Explorer EV for the European market back in March. The model is the first of the two crossovers, which will be underpinned by Volkswagen Group’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive) architecture. Several models popular across Europe are based on the exact same platform: the Audi Q4 e-tron crossover, Cupra’s first electric car, Born, as well as Skoda’s Enyaq iV, are three of the many.

The new Ford Explorer EV was originally slated to enter production at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Germany, which the carmaker opened back in June. The production center has undergone a billion-dollar revamp and will reportedly have a capacity of around 30,000 units next year.

Ford, though, announced that the company has to push back plans to build 600,000 EVs in total next year. And the Ford Explorer EV is also affected by the move.

Electrive reports that the production of the Ford Explorer EV will be delayed for around six months. The reason is the implementation of new sophisticated global safety regulations in connection with the powertrain of the model. There is no info on the exact type of regulations that the powertrain has to comply with in order to enter production, but it is clear that the company decided to launch cars in compliance with the upcoming standard. However, the regulations are not in force in the European Union.

Ford did not mention any timeline regarding the launch of the Explorer EV. But it should reportedly arrive in the summer of 2024. The production of the crossover was slated to kick off this August, right after the summer break. But workers at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center were informed about the delay.

The carmaker has not disclosed any information on the powertrain, so the output and range figures are still under wraps. But, considering that it is a Volkswagen Group-sourced platform that underpins the Ford EV, it should get the 82 kWh battery pack for models in this segment. The ID.4, for instance, comes with outputs of 150 kW (201 horsepower / 204 PS), 195 kW (261 horsepower / 265 PS), and 220 kW (295 horsepower / 299 PS), respectively.

FoMoCo reveled that the battery could be charged from 10 to 80% in just 25 minutes.

What we do know is that customers will be able to order either the Explorer or the Explorer Premium trim. The entry-level version will start at around 45,000 euros ($49,474). Until this moment, only non-binding reservations were possible.
