The Mazda CX-5 is a resounding success for the Japanese manufacturer. Aside from all the praise it has received for its well-proportioned looks, great dynamics and efficient engines, it has also been praised for its safety. Having already received the maximum five stars from Euro NCAP, the European car safety organization is highlighting the CX-5 yet again, for the standard fitment of safety systems.
Aside from the usual ABS and EBD, the CX-5 also gets standard-fit Autonomous Emergency Braking. Mazda’s system is called ‘Smart City Brake Support’. It will first alert the driver, then brake for the driver if he or she fails to react to an obstacle.
Apparently, according to Euro NCAP, AEB systems can reduce accidents by up to 27% - and while we do not agree with fixed percentages on something as spontaneous as a car crash, we do see such systems as a very good addition to any car.
Also, Euro NCAP have announced that they will be including AEB in its crash rating in two years’ time, and are asking all manufacturers to fit it as standard to all their cars. It is a great initiative and manufacturers should better take note, otherwise the five star rating will become a rare occurrence after 2014.
