Ettore Bugatti’s Personal Car Up for Auction

Though the name speaks for itself, for those who never heard of Ettore Bugatti, he was an Italian automobile designer and manufacturer, founder of, as you might have already guessed, the Bugatti automobile company.

It is clear now why his 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe is the headline of the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, scheduled to be held by Gooding & Company on August 15-16, 2009.

“This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be honoring the Bugatti marque and Gooding & Company is delighted to offer, at no reserve, one of the most spectacular Bugattis ever built,” said David Gooding, founder and president of Gooding & Company. "Ettore Bugatti’s personal car will undoubtedly capture a great deal of attention during the week and will draw connoisseurs worldwide to our auction.”

This specific car is considered to have a huge historical significance. It was originally assembled as a birthday gift for Ettore Bugatti. The car managed to escape World War II and after Ettore Bugatti’s death in 1947, it continued to be maintained and stored at the Bugatti workshop in Molsheim, France.

During this period of time, the car was factory upgraded, including with tailored interior accessories and an unique engine and transmission, as well as other subtle technical improvements. According to Gooding & Company “since leaving the Bugatti factory in the late 1950s, Chassis 57335 has had only a few protective caretakers, and remains one of the most correct and original Bugattis in existence.”

The Pebble Beach Auction will feature preview days between August 12-16. The auctions will be located at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center, with a $40 per person for the admission. Auction catalogs are available for $100 and admit two to the viewing and the auction.
