Rugby Stars at Mazda Blenheim Triathlon

As the headline sponsor of the Blenheim Triathlon, Mazda is entering its own team to participate at the event, which will also be attended by the Worcester Warriors RFC and Oxford University RFC players.

This weekend, elite runners like Jonathan Brownlee and rugby stars Pat Sanderson, Miles Benjamin and Kai Horstmann will be amongst the 5,500 competitors made up of elite athletes, first timers and relay teams.

“As a team we are always taking on big challenges in the Guinness Premiership and so we’re really looking forward to switching our attention for a day to the Mazda Blenheim Triathlon which is a superb event and a memorable challenge for all who take part,” said Pat Sanderson, Captain of Worcester Warriors RFC.

This weekend’s swimming, cycling and running event is also expected to attract 15,000 spectators. The race, which sees the male and female elite athletes competing for their share of the £6,000 event prize money, will be broadcasted by Channel 4 Television.

According to Mazda Sales and Marketing Director Mark Cameron, “At Mazda we believe in leading by example, which is why so many of our staff from all levels of the business are competing at Blenheim. Our philosophy is about exhilarating experiences and the thrill of challenging oneself and triathlon encapsulates that perfectly.”

It will be a tight race for the British athletes, as both Oxford and Cambridge Universities have a score to settle. A battle of the sexes is expected, as Cambridge men have won the previous 6 meetings whilst Oxford women have won the last 4.

Nick Rusling, Managing Director of IMG Mass Participation Sports, said: “Triathlon is the UK’s fastest growing Mass Participation Sport and Blenheim is definitely one of the most prestigious triathlons to be involved in, whether taking part or cheering-on competitors during their swim, bike or run.”
