The Blue Oval company knows who they're fighting. So, it naturally takes quite a few jabs at the best-selling Tesla Model Y crossover but also at a Porsche – the Macan Electric.
Donna Dickson, the Chief Engineer of the Mustang Mach-E SUV, promises the brand listened to its customers and incorporated the feedback into the vehicle for the enhanced 2024 model year. That includes more performance, additional range and higher DC fast charging speeds, more options, plus "a new electric pony for our growing stable that can take you off-road when you want to get your Mustang a little dirty."
In terms of performance, the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is allegedly faster than the Tesla Model Y Performance – when equipped with the up-to-$995 Performance Upgrade, the sprint to 60 mph (96 kph) takes 3.3 seconds, which is less than a Model Y Performance or Macan 4 Electric. Thanks to a new in-house eMotor, there's an additional 100 lb. ft. compared to standard GTs, so it also "cracks" the quarter-mile time in 11.8 seconds at up to 114 mph.
The Performance Upgrade is optional on GT models and standard on the new Mustang Mach-E Rally – the former also gets the Ford Performance front seats, MagneRide Damping System, and Brembo front brake calipers as standard equipment while previously they were offered only on the 2023 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition. Also, the new rear eMotor is lighter and offered standard across the entire lineup with improved torque.
Speaking of upgrades, the 2024 Mustang Mach-E models with the optional extended range battery charge up to 20% quicker at DC fast charging stations for 10-80% in approximately 36.2 minutes (8.8 minutes faster than before). The standard pack is 5.7 minutes faster, meanwhile. The range is also higher – 250 miles for Mach-E Select RWD (Model Y RWD has 260 miles), 265 miles for Rally, 280 miles for GT (Model Y Performance has 279 miles), and the Mach-E Premium RWD with extended battery goes up to 320 miles – the AWD Model Y Long Range touts 310 miles on a single charge.
The pricing situation is also comparable or slightly favorable to Mustang Mach-E. The Select RWD model is $39,995, while the Tesla Model Y RWD starts from $44,990 (or $37,490 after federal tax credit). There are many tiers thanks to Select, Premium, GT, and Rally trims plus the RWD or AWD and standard or extended battery packs – and the new Rally flagship with extended range battery and AWD is $59,995. The latter comes with a one-inch raised suspension, plus rally-inspired appearance wheels, tires, spoilers, and a stripe package.
Additionally, Ford offers the comfort of both Blue Oval Charge Network and Tesla Superchargers, and the $1,995 Bronze Appearance Package on GTs, an updated user experience on the 15.5-inch SYNC 4 central touchscreen, plus Ford BlueCruise for hands-free highway driving.
