Elon Musk's father does not drive, does not own, and does not want a Tesla. Errol Musk turned down his son’s offer to send him a Tesla all the way to South Africa.
Errol Musk drives owns a luxury sedan, a sports car, and a vintage plane, but is not too kin to get a Tesla, the car that his son’s company builds. Not now and not anytime soon.

Errol lives in South Africa, where electric cars are anything but popular. So he would rather go for something more practical like, let’s say, a Rolls-Royce. That is what he currently drives or is chauffeured in.

Besides, with all the shipping and import costs, a Tesla would be way too expensive to be shipped to South Africa. Too expensive even for Elon Musk’s billionaire father, whose net worth hits $278 billion. The Tesla CEO offered to pay for everything, but his father still said no.

The cost of the car, shipping, and fees would have come to a total of about 3.5 million rand, which is just over $181,000. "It’s just not worth it," Errol explained to his son.

Furthermore, there is no Tesla representation in South Africa, and the charging infrastructure is poor in the territory of his country. EVs are a rare sight in the state. There are approximately 1,500 electric cars there and around 300 charging stations. In comparison, there are over 2 million EVs in the United States and over 167,000 public charging stations, according to the Department of Energy. Furthermore, Tesla has the largest network of roadside fast chargers in the US: 20,000.

Errol has no idea what Elon wanted to send, but Musk junior would probably would have chosen one of the most expensive for the senior. The Model S Plaid is currently the most expensive car in Tesla’s lineup.

It would be between $3,300 and $7,000 to ship a car from the United States to South Africa, according to data provided by the automotive shipping company A1 Auto Transport for Business Insider. There is a 25% tariff on car imports in South Africa.

Musk’s father has recently admitted the refusal in a conversation with Business Insider. It was January 2022 when he told his son he did not want a Tesla. Elon hasn’t convinced him since. He did drive a Tesla and even took the Roadster for a spin, but he has never owned one.

Errol Musk owns a Rolls Royce, a sports car, and a 1947 Ryan Nation plan, which he occasionally flies. "I've always had Rolls-Royces. I prefer to drive a Rolls-Royce. It’s out better – I mean it's not better than a Tesla, but it’s nicer for me anyway." Musk’s father stated. He admits he would have definitely owned a Tesla if he lived in the US.
