DS, the brand owned by PSA Peugeot-Citroen, is considering expanding its offering with a plug-in hybrid SUV.
While the brand currently has a hybrid crossover in its portfolio, the DS5, it is far from an SUV. The other model in the range that can be considered an SUV is the DS4 Crossback, but it is also a crossover.

Meanwhile, in China, the DS brand sells an SUV called DS6. It is joined by the DS 5LS, which was initially unveiled as another China-only product.

The European market is on an SUV craze, just like the USA, and the marketing specialists at DS have surely seen the trend. One would have to wear horse blinders not to observe the popularity of SUVs around the world, and the French brand needs a new product to sell more units.

While DS officials have announced that the SUV they sell in China will only be marketed there, the platform can be reconfigured to suit the taste of European clients.

Since plug-in hybrids are gaining popularity in this market, and the DS brand is also focusing on new possibilities, the idea of a plug-in hybrid SUV from the French automaker has no grounds to be ruled out.

At this time, we do not possess an official confirmation of the company’s plans to launch a plug-in hybrid SUV per se. However, DS already sells the DS6 in a market outside China, and their 2020 offensive announced in 2014 includes launching six all-new models by that year.

Just like other DS models, the new plug-in hybrid SUV from the brand will share underpinnings with Citroen vehicles. This would happen even if DS is developing technologies and solutions on its own, but it would not be financially sustainable for the recently-founded branch of PSA Peugeot Citroen to make new models from scratch.

The PSA Group has already confirmed its plan to launch its next generation of plug-in hybrid cars, which is set to reach the market in 2019.

They will come with quick charging solutions, as well as Lithium Ion batteries. From the moment this was officially announced, the DS brand was included in the plans, so it is just a matter of time till we see a production DS SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
