The standalone DS brand is nothing more than Citroen with premium ambitions. Other than rebadged Citroen models, DS is talented at making concept vehicles. The DS E-Tense is a case in point thanks to its neat design and electric powertrain.
DS will debut the DS E-Tense next week at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, a year after the launch of the premium marque. Is it just me or does this thing look like the bastard lovechild between a Protoss Zealot and a grand tourer? An attractive lovechild, that is.
From the featured photograph, it’s hard to believe the E-Tense measures 185.8 inches (4.72 meters) in length, almost as long as a Mercedes-AMG C63 S. The icing on the cake, however, is the 50.7-inch (1.29 meter) height, which is barely higher than an Audi R8.
The DS LED Vision jewel-like headlights, green ametrine paint, aggressive design of the rear, and the lack of a rear windshield are other design details that make the E-Tense concept a stunning styling exercise.
My favorite design detail, though, is inspired by the original Citroen DS. More specifically, the DS E-Tense Concept is equipped with turning signals integrated into the roof. Moving on to the cabin of the E-Tense, here we find a mix of avant-garde styling and high-quality materials. The interior design revolves around a tulip-shaped steering wheel and cold steel trim on the dashboard.
The French concept is motivated by an electric powertrain with 402 horsepower and 516 Nm (380 lb-ft). According to the peeps at DS, that’s powerful enough to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.5 seconds. In terms of range, the concept will theoretically do 223 miles (360 km) city provided that the batteries are charged. Mind you, DS is so French it “forgot” to specify the capacity. In my mind, that translates to “We could turn this concept into a production vehicle, but we won't. Because things. Vive la France!”
