After the demise of the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Challenger, the S650 generation Ford Mustang is the only muscle car still in production. The Dearborn marque won't rest on its surprising laurels just yet, as it plans to expand the family with additional models.
So far, the offering comprises the 2.3-liter four-pot and 5.0L Coyote V8. The former powers the EcoBoost variant, making 315 hp (319 ps/235 kW) and 350 lb-ft (475 Nm) of torque. The latter is reserved for the GT and Dark Horse. The GT enjoys up to 486 hp (493 ps/363 kW) and 415 lb-ft (563 Nm) with the optional active exhaust system installed, and the Dark Horse brings 500 hp (507 ps/373 kW) and 418 lb-ft (567 Nm) to the table.

The rumor mill speaks of the Shelby GT500 making a comeback next year as a 2026 model. It is expected to carry an MSRP of just under $100,000 and should dwarf its predecessor in every aspect. The previous Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 had 760 hp (771 ps/567 kW) on tap and 627 pound-feet (847 Nm) of torque. The 5.2L supercharged V8 rockets it to 62 mph (97 kph) in three seconds, and with a skilled driver at the helm, it is a ten-second car.

But the GT500 isn't the only high-end version of the Mustang in the making, as the Blue Oval is also working on the GTD. This is a true supercar variant of the S650, which should enter production sometime this year. It is estimated to start at roughly $300K, and it packs a tuned 5.2L V8 with a supercharger strapped to it. The power unit can rev at over 7,500 rpm and has a targeted output of more than 800 hp (811 ps/597 kW) when it comes to this model. That's not all, as it is said to be able to conquer the 'Ring with a sub-7-minute lap time.

It will be interesting to learn more about it, like how many copies Ford will make and how fast it is in a straight-line acceleration. On top of that, we're dying to find out if it can really take a swing at the supercar establishment and if it has what it takes to put the upcoming Chevy Corvette ZR1 in its corner. Speaking of which, the bowtie brand's mid-engine model is understood to have some 850 horsepower, and it should cost way less than the Mustang GTD.

Until we learn more about it, the muscle car acting as an exotic model will keep falling into the hands of rendering artists. Some of them, like abimelecdesign on Instagram, can keep it simple, and in this case, it has only received a new color: mystichrome. The chameleon-like hue was applied to almost all body panels, and the fresh golden look of the wheels joins it. Everything else carries over from the real thing, and we think the Mustang GTD looks even more exotic dressed like this. Do you?
