In today’s strange – and possibly fake – news, cab drivers from Delhi, India, are complaining about how they’re being turned into targets by the police, who keep fining them for not having condoms in the car’s first-aid box.
Now, every sane person would wonder what condoms have to do with first-aid – and apparently, so do these cab drivers, who tell ANI (Asian News International) that they believe they’re being turned into milk cows by the every-greedy policemen. Still, a handful of them claim to have been stopped by the police and asked to show their first-aid box, and then penalized if the box did not include protection.

According to ANI, even the policemen are at a loss as to why these items should be included in the box. However, some of them claim that their versatility makes them indispensable: they can be worn over the shoes when it rains, turned into tourniquets in case of an accident, or used to temporarily stop a leak when a pipe bursts.

If this sounds like too much, it’s because it is. Despite the alleged claims from the cab drivers, there is no mention of condoms in the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules (1993) in the section related to the first-aid box. Which, yes, is mandatory. If there is no law mentioning them, officers can’t issue fines for their absence.

“There is nothing mentioned in The Motor Vehicles Act about condoms. We are not issuing any challan [fine] to drivers for not having condoms in their first aid kits,” Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Taj Hasan says in a statement for the same media outlet.

So either a handful of rogue policemen set out to make an extra buck by carving out their own law on first-aid kits in cabbies’ cars, or cab drivers in Delhi got spooked and started driving around with condoms in the first-aid box for nothing. Whatever the case, the cabbies' predicament would have been smaller if they'd known the law.
