From the outside, it was complete mayhem: a Ford truck was spinning out of control and smashing into parked cars, while going through a busy intersection in Huntington Park, California.
A medical issue may have caused the driver to lose control of the car and police are looking into that possibility. It all started when 75-year-old Jose Landazure, at the wheel of his 1999 Ford Ranger, rear-ended a white Ford Escape while coming out of the intersection.
Footage shot by eyewitnesses and surveillance video show that Landazure tried to back away from the Escape but completely lost control of his own vehicle. As smoke was coming out of the rear wheels, he made a U-turn backwards, smashing into cars in the parking lot of a nearby mall.
He put the car back in Drive and, again with smoke coming out of the wheels, rushed through the intersection once more, swerved and smashed into the Escape once more. This time, the impact was so forceful that it sent the Escape over the curb.
Eyewitnesses rushed for cover, while – of course – making sure they still had a good look at the incident unfolding. Footage of it emerged on social media within minutes of it happening.
Huntington Park Police and California Highway Patrol are now investigating, KTLA reports. They say 4 vehicles in total were damaged but call the incident an “isolated” one. They still don’t know what happened to make Landazure lose control of his truck like that, but they have ruled alcohol as a contributing factor.
They also say that only Landazure was hurt, but that there’s a probability he wasn’t hurt in the crash: surveillance video shows that, when the truck finally came to a stop and bystanders rushed to get him out of the wreck and to take his keys, one man punched him through the open window. He must’ve assumed Landazure was smashing into cars on purpose.
