What was probably meant as a funny prank of some sort ended up badly for a 21-year-old man, who climbed out on the roof of a moving car, slipped, fell and hit his head.
It happened at the weekend in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, MV Times reports. The man’s identity hasn’t been disclosed, but sources close to the police reveal for the publication that he remains in critical condition. He hit his head in the fall and may have also partially hit a telephone pole.

Police are yet to determine what prompted the man to get out on the roof of a moving Volkswagen Passat. However, the driver of the car has already been charged in relation to the incident.

According to Edgartown Police Chief Bruce McNamee, the man was picked up at the beach by “two juvenile females” in the Passat.

“At some point while the car was underway, the man climbed out of the car and onto its roof,” MV Times writes. “The female operator reportedly yelled at him to get back inside and decelerated, McNamee said, whereupon the man slid or fell off the car.”

When police arrived at the scene, they found the man on the street at an intersection, and rendered first-aid until EMTs arrived. The man was first taken to a local hospital but was flown to Massachusetts when his condition didn’t improve.

“Police have charged the driver with a junior operator violation (transporting passengers) and negligent operation of a motor vehicle,” the same publication reports.

Similar incidents have made headlines before, and were related to what is known as “car surfing,” when one passenger climbs onto the roof of a moving car and tries to maintain balance at a steady speed. The police didn’t say whether this is also the case here but given the relatively young age of all those involved, it’s a possibility.
