It's been roughly half a year since the new generation BMW 5 Series premiered. We still don't dig the exterior design, but then again, we said the same thing about the G30, aka the previous iteration, which replaced the gorgeous F10.
There are two versions of the executive sedan on sale in the United States, the 530i and 540i. The former features a 255-horsepower (259 ps/190 kW) 2.0-liter gasoline engine with rear-wheel drive, though the xDrive AWD system is available. The latter comes fitted with the xDrive and brings 375 hp (380 ps/280 kW) to the party from its 3.0-liter straight-six.

A base 530i Sedan will set you back $57,900, not factoring in the destination charge, dealer markups, and options. The xDrive is a $2,300 option. As for the 540i xDrive, it starts at $64,900. The new 5er also comes in the i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 electric specifications, with 335 hp (340 ps/250 kW) and 593 hp (601 ps/442 kW), respectively. The single-motor and dual-motor models have respective MSRPs of $66,800 and $84,100.

BMW is also working on the Touring – aka station wagon – version of the new-gen 5 Series, which will be offered in the all-electric guise, as well. And as you already know, the 5 Series Touring will be kept away from North America. In fact, it's been reported that they will only launch in Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. Things might be different when it comes to the upcoming M5 Touring, as it might make its way stateside to take on the Audi RS 6 Avant, or that's what certain outlets speculate, anyway.

As usual, the all-new BMW 5 Series lineup will comprise the sedan and estate models, with the Munich auto marque having no intention of expanding it with additional body styles. And that's a good thing, as nobody wants the GT to come back, and there is no room for coupe and convertible options either, as they would step on the toes of the 8 Series, which is one of the best-looking modern-day Bimmers, in our opinion, regardless of the roof and how many doors it has.

However, while it is clear that the car manufacturer won't ditch all common sense to launch additional versions of the new 5er, an open-top model already exists in Fantasy Land. It has a.c.g_design on Instagram behind it, who kept it simple by retaining the face of the original, deleting the rear doors, shaving a few inches from the wheelbase length, and giving it an open-top view of the sky above, complete with a special compartment behind the rear seats to stow the folding roof.

Now, we may not be fans of this design, as we think the 5er looks best as a four-door sedan, but we certainly wouldn’t say not a two-door coupe. Let’s hope someone sees this paragraph and decides to rearrange its pixels to make it happen.
