BMW is teasing the upcoming 5 Series Touring, a model that will be available in Europe and selected markets in Asia. But America is not getting the most spacious of the 5 Series lineup.
Codenamed G61, the BMW 5 Series Touring should be ready in the first quarter of 2024, because it is scheduled to celebrate its world premiere in spring, if not February. The German premium carmaker projects Europe as the main market for the long-roof version. The model will also end up on the Japanese and Taiwanese markets.

Built on the same CLAR platform as the sedan, the Touring will come with an engine lineup copy-pasted from its sibling. That means that there will also be an electric variant in the shape of the i5 Touring, available as the i5 eDrive 40 Touring with 340 PS (335 horsepower) and the range-topping i5 M60 xDrive Sedan with 601 PS (593 horsepower).

Meanwhile, the cars powered by combustion engines will all be electrified, coming as mild hybrids with a 48-volt onboard technology or plug-in hybrids. It will be the first premium car of its kind to be offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. The M5 Touring with a 4.4-liter V8 integrated in a plug-in hybrid system, sourced from the XM crossover, should sit at the top of the ICE lineup with 800 PS (790 horsepower).

BMW has also released a shadowy image of the upcoming model showing the profile of the car. As expected, the headlights of the Touring version seem identical to those of the 5 Series sedan. But because the rear has been redesigned, the taillights will be similar to those that we have seen on the 3 Series Touring.

Most likely, the car will sport the split tailgate, which allows the rear window to be open independently from the tailgate for easier access to the luggage space. BMW has been using this solution on estates and crossovers for the past few years.

The electric version will get the faux kidney grille, with the real thing being replaced by black plastic panels like in the i3, i4, and i5. The iconic Hofmeister window is going to be there, and so are the flush door handles.

The upcoming 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring will not set wheels in the United States. America is only getting the eight-generation 5 Series and i5 Series sedan, which were launched in South Korea for the first time, as BMW wanted to highlight the importance of the market.

In Germany, deliveries of the business sedan will kick off on October 21. One week later, on October 28, it will arrive in the US. The other global markets will follow on October 25.
