Back in May, the safety watchdogs of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on 2004 to 2006 model year Dodge Ram pickup trucks over a potential clutch interlock switch failure. More than six months after that, the safety recall was finally announced by FCA US LLC.
Back then, estimates hinted towards a population of circa 110,000 affected vehicles, but the company is adamant only 66,819 older-model pickup trucks are indeed affected by the previously mentioned glitch, which has been unfortunately related to one fatality.
A complaint filed with the NHTSA earlier this year alleged that a child entered a truck equipped with a manual gearbox and managed to start the vehicle without depressing the clutch pedal, making the truck creep forward, fatally wounding another child which happened to stand in front of the truck.
All these older-model workhorses manufactured by FCA are fitted with a stick shift and all of them need to have their faulty clutch ignition interlock switches replaced by authorized dealer service departments
In an official statement, FCA US LLC says that owners will be notified starting next year on February 13th.
This voluntary recall covers certain Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and Mitsubishi Raider workhorses from the 2006 to 2007 model years. Internal investigations assessed that the fault stands with a spring wire that differs from the one used in previous switches used by the company’s vehicles.
The alternate wire may break and the vehicle may not start. A vehicle may exhibit unintended movement when its ignition key is turned, if recommended starting procedures are not followed. Alternate wire switches were not used in any pickup trucks produced before July 2005 or after June 2006.
