In today's news that isn't really news, Citroen is becoming more and more of a Chinese car company, as sales in Europe still slide and one in the People's Republic are on the rise. The French carmaker with double chevrons just unveiled a new DS model called the DS 5LS. It's specifically designed for the local market, a long wheelbase sedan with lots of chrome.
But the 5LS is only the first of three new models which Citroen hopes will impress Chinese buyers. The other two are an SUV based on the Wild Rubis Concept and a full-size flagship sedan inspired by the Numero 9 design study.
Citroen's managing director Frederic Banzet told Autoexpress that these three cars will be built at a new DS factory in Shenzhen together with Chinese partner Changan.
“During the downturn we went through some difficult times, and we had to prioritize certain projects. We had to back the investment in China, as the whole business is far too reliant on Europe,” the company official said, explaining why Citroen's focus has changed so drastically.
