Chrysler Group is investing $164 million to add production of Tigershark engine at its North Engine Plant in Saltillo, Mexico, the Detroit-based automaker announced today. The new investment will create 470 new jobs and will raise Saltillo investment to $1.25 billion.
Once production of the Tigershark engine being, the two Saltillo facilities will employ 1,570 workers, with more than 1,100 of them already working to assemble the Fiat Ducato-based 2014 Ram ProMaster van. Both the Ram ProMaster and the Tigershark engine, the latter available in the Jeep Cherokee and Dodge Dart, will be exported to different markets, based on Free Trade Agreements that Mexico has with several countries.
“I would like to thank President Enrique Peña Nieto for the support his administration has given us, first as Governor and now as President. He has always shown a great commitment to promoting strategically important projects,” said Fiat & Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. “All of this would not be possible without the extraordinary spirit of collaboration we have found in both the federal and state governments. We feel privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to the future growth of Mexico.”
