Chrysler to Consider Bringing Viper Back to Le Mans

After decades of rift between the FIA (which governs such premier racing series as F1, the WRC and the WTCC) and the ACO (which organizes Le Mans and its related series), the two have gotten together to form the new FIA World Endurance Championship.

The FIA World Endurance Championship will replace both the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the FIA GT1 World Championship starting next year, making it the ideal venue to prove a really powerful sportscar has the reliability that is so important in this day and age.

Toyota has already admitted to considering a LMP1 program, and now reports from indicate that the Chrysler Group could be preparing to rejoin endurance racing with a 24-hour version of the next-generation Viper. The original version of the car was transformed into the GTS-R that won the Nurburgring race the Rolex 24 at Daytona. It also won in its class in 1998, 99 and 2000 at Le Mans, followed by similar results in the FIA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series.

Chrysler has reportedly enlisted the help of Riley Technologies, the chassis manufacturer behind eight years running of Grand Am champions. The company will evaluate whether the next road car is a suitable platform, though we wouldn’t hold our breath, as it will reportedly enter production in 2013.

"We are investigating some things and seeing what is out there, although no decision has been made yet. We have to be very careful about what we do," said Chrysler's motorsport manager Gary Johnson, according to Autosport.

We'd love to see a Viper win Le Mans again, instead of a Vette. Don't get us wrong, the P&M Corvettes are nothing short of amazing, but that shark-like Viper would make for such a sight on the track.
