FCA US LLC, the company that used to be Chrysler before Fiat entered the scene, has issued the first recall for the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV and Dodge Hornet PHEV. As it happens, the 12-volt battery's positive cable and the high-voltage connector cable may not have been tightened properly from the factory, leading to an overheating condition that may result in a fire while driving or when parked.
Now in cahoots with Groupe PSA under the Stellantis umbrella, the Auburn Hills-based automaker became aware of said problem on August 23 following a report filed by an employee from the Pomigliano d'Arco assembly facility in Italy. The Hornet bears VINs beginning with ZA, which indicates that Dodge's take on the Alfa Romeo Tonale also comes from this production plant.

Originally constructed by Alfa Romeo when the company was still independent, Pomigliano d'Arco was originally tasked with producing the Alfasud, the automaker's first series-production automobile with front-wheel drive. Officially referred to as the Giambattista Vico Plant, said facility also produces the soon-to-be-refreshed Panda city car.

To debut on July 11, 2024 (the 125th anniversary of Fiat), the next generation takes inspiration from the Centoventi concept. Similar to the all-new 600, it's expected with at least one combustion engine and as an EV. Stellantis Europe S.p.A. issued a corrective action at the plant on August 24, updating the battery-powered screwdriver to make sure that loose cables won't hamper the Tonale PHEV and Hornet PHEV ever again.

The company further added results tracking to the manufacturing execution system. At press time, the automaker is aware of two field reports related to said problem, with receipt dates of July 18 and August 14. Stellantis didn't mention vehicle fires per se, but on the upside, there are no reports of crashes or injuries whatsoever.

Recalled over an assembly issue rather than a design defect, the affected Hornet PHEVs were produced in the period between December 13, 2022 and August 23, 2023 for the 2023 through 2024 model years. The build dates for the Tonale PHEV range from February 9, 2023 to August 23, 2023. A grand total of 4,129 vehicles are called back in the United States of America.

Owners will be informed of this blunder on October 27. Dealers will make sure the 12-volt battery's positive cable and high-voltage connector cable are tightened to the correct specifications. In the meantime, owners are urged to park outside and away from builds and other vehicles until the remedy is performed.

Only available as a plug-in hybrid, the Tonale for the US market is listed at $42,995 sans destination charge, making it more expensive than a V8-powered Challenger R/T. As for the Hornet, the optional plug-in hybrid is advertised as the R/T from $40,935 as standard or $45,935 for the R/T Plus trim level. According to Dodge, the plug-in hybrid Hornet R/T is the segment's most powerful sport utility vehicle thanks to 288 horsepower and 383 pound-feet (520 Nm) of torque.
