BMW tossed out the old M2 that many people loved and came up with something even better, the M2 Competition. Besides the ugly alloy wheels, Chris Harris loves pretty much everything about it.
BMW Competition models are, as Harris says, usually made unnecessarily harsh and ugly, but the M2 is different. Because of new emissions regulations, with which the engine didn't comply, the company could either drop the model completely or install the one from the M3.
And they did, the result is a slightly more complicated M 3-liter, complete with a carbon fiber tower brace and twin-turbo configuration. It makes more power too, 410 HP vs. 370 HP before, as well as 550 Nm vs. 465.
The Top Gear presented acts a little annoyed with the fact that 50 kilos have been added to its weight, making the P/W ration not much different. But when you have 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and 280 Nm (174mph) in the cheapest M car, can you really complain?
Other upgrades have been made too, like added cooling, a new M rear diff, new suspension, brakes, and steering setup. And the result is a car that's still got that fun muscle car feels but also an extra layer of precision and handling. Harris comments that he would have the M2 Competition over a second-hand M3 and while the Cayman is still the last word in precision, this is more fun.
We firmly believe that any price is low for the M2 Competition because it's surely a collector's car. No matter what UK media says, the next 2 Series is going to be a 4-door FWD coupe like the CLA, so buy this pure modern day E46 while you still can.
But you guys aren't here for our ramblings around the future of the BMW brand. Seeing Harris drifting a car for the first time since the summer is what YouTube enjoyment is all about.
