While the French automaker puts the finishing touches on the Chiron Super Sport 300+, you can enter the Bugatti owner’s club on the cheap if you have $125,000 to spare. A man from Florida is selling a replica of the Veyron for the aforementioned sum, and the Craigslist ad explains that the build cost $90,000 while the donor vehicle is a… wait for it… Mercury Cougar.
More to the point, a 2002 model serves as the building block for this replicar. The 2.5-liter Duratec V6 engine and front-wheel drive are underwhelming at this price point, but on the upside, this is a 17-trophy winning replicaas per the seller. The A/C still works, the “rear wing retracts just like the real one,” and the exhaust is described as “throaty and strong” if you can believe that.

A custom car insurance at Haggerty is also included, sporting an agreed value of $120,000. Trades are also welcome, but if you think about it for a second, who would trade a car worth $125,000 for a 2002 Mercury Cougar that poses as a Bugatti? Given these circumstances, is it surprising that the Craigslist ad is listed for 15 days and counting at the time of writing?

The odometer might read 129,239 miles, but then you spot the 280-mph speedometer. That’s wishful thinking even for the real Veyron, more so for a replicar that struggles to hit 130 miles per hour. The gauges are lifted from the Cougar but feature Bugatti emblems. Then you glance at the clock, which sports the 2000s Chrysler logo for some reason or another.

It also comes as a surprise – or disappointment – that the interior hasn’t been cleaned for quite some time. Zooming in reveals a crusty center console and what appears to be dried up Coca-Cola. Oh deary me…

Whatever the seller thinks about his prized replica of a multi-million dollar hypercar, a 17-year-old Mercury isn’t worth six figures. And unless the price drops to $50,000 or thereabouts, he’ll be stuck with the car for the foreseeable future.
