CarPlay Now Worse Than Android Auto, Sometimes Crashing Head Units While Driving

The experience with CarPlay in a Honda often turns into a small nightmare, and here at autoevolution we have detailed the struggle customers of the Japanese brand are trying to deal with on several occasions.
And now it looks like the whole thing is even getting worse.

In theory, Apple’s walled garden is supposed to make CarPlay more reliable than Android Auto, and in some cases, it really does. But as far as Honda owners are concerned, there’s no difference between the two, and occasionally, CarPlay leads to major issues like the head unit itself crashing while driving.

A discussion thread on reddit here has several Honda owners complaining of this problem that’s apparently getting worse, and probably the most concerning tidbit is that nobody knows exactly what’s going on and how to fix it. Not even dealerships, that is, as all the solutions they’ve tried made absolutely no difference.

According to an official Honda service bulletin, dealerships are instructed to check the software version installed on the iPhone and update the device to the newest release, check the cable, and restart the phone. These are obviously just generic workarounds that fail to bring things back to normal.

Others are struggling with different CarPlay problems, including some sort of pixelation and screen glitches that occur all of sudden and which can only be fixed by switching from one app to another. This quick trick sometimes solves the problems, but of course, it’s not necessarily the most convenient, especially if you’re driving and you are supposed to keep the eyes on the road.

Unfortunately, there’s no workaround that just fixes things for everybody, and despite such problems being around for many months already, there’s still no patch on the radar.

In case you’re wondering, the latest software updates released by Honda for its head units also don’t correct these problems, so they keep happening even on fully up-to-date setups.
