Buick Confirms 2010 Crossover, Hybrid Version in 2011

General Motors has just confirmed that it will debut a five-passenger crossover model in 2010 that will rely on a new family of fuel-efficient direct-inject gas engines, with a plug-in hybrid flavor to follow in 2011. The future crossover doesn't have a name for the time being, but General Motors says it will be powered by an Ecotec 2.4L direct-injected four-cylinder engine with an optional 3.0L direct-injected V-6.

Fuel efficiency will be one of the key aspects of the new Buick, with ratings going around 30 mpg or more on the highway. Nevertheless, final fuel consumption figures and full specifications will be announced later.

"Some customers who have been drawn to the Enclave were looking for something a little smaller, but they didn't want to give up craftsmanship or a quiet ride to get there," said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. "We believe this new Buick will excite those customers, and will continue to broaden the appeal of the brand."

The new Buick Crossover will get a hybrid version in 2011 and will rely on a modified version of GM's 2-Mode hybrid system powered by lithium-ion batteries. The battery back will have an estimated recharging time of four to five hours, according to early figures.

"LG Chem - the supplier of our battery cells for the Volt - has also been selected to supply the lithium-ion cells for the new Buick plug-in hybrid, and its Troy, Mich.-based subsidiary Compact Power will supply the pack," Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman of product development, said.
