The only positive side of track day crashes is that these events can serve as free driving lessons for those sitting outside the machines involved in the ka-bangs. And a recent crash that took place on the Circuit Zandvoort certainly has a thing or two to teach us.
The accident we're talking about took place yesterday, with the Dutch circuit seeing a Volkswagen Golf GTI taking out another GTI.

We're looking at Mk V incarnations of the famous hot hatch here and we'll remind you this is the generation that restored the glory of the three-letter badge. Given the age of these cars, they are now affordable, which explains their presence on the track.

The accident

We can see the red Vee-Dub losing the rear end just before entering a bend and it looks like the guy behind the wheel brought lift-off oversteer (possibly brake-aided) trouble upon himself.

Alas, as we mentioned above, the issue spread to another Golf GTI, a silver car, which was behind the red machine when the latter spun.

The driver of the silver VW somehow locked the brakes while trying to avoid hitting the sliding car in front of him, with this surprisingly not leading to contact between the two.

However, just as it seemed that the silver GTI would escape the situation without a scratch, the red car came back around, with the latter's posterior hitting the side of the first.

We can't help but think that, if the driver of the silver Golf had chosen a wider line, the impact might have been avoided. The crash was a pretty serious one, as it almost caused the Silver GTI to spin.

Oh well, at least no other cars were involved in the crash - the track seemed to be full at the time, so this shouldn't be taken lightly.
