Though a name traditionally associated with Harley-Davidson bikes and the cruiser world, Mustang decided to expand operations and step into the other segments of the motorcycle market, with Triumph being the first maker to receive aftermarket seats. Today, Mustang announces the first custom seat for the BMW R1200GS, coining their entry in the adventure touring segment.
Far from being just another cover added to the existing seat, the new Mustang saddles come with revised baseplate, special foam and premium covers. Optimum weight distribution is achieved by CAD-aided creation, with 5 new mounting brackets being engineered for the Bavarian bike.

All seats are filled with the Mustang proprietary formula foam, ensuring controlled density for the polyurethane and helping these seats maintain their shape and top-notch support for years, a trademark for the maker. The design involved carefully tweaking the shape, angle and foam density, all combined with the extra strength needed to withstand the abuse adventure-touring seats usually have to face during long hauls.

The covers are made from premium, expanded vinyl, with the appearance of high-grade leather, but being exceedingly durable and weather resistant. All seams are sewn twice while “the bottom edge of the cover is hemmed and then riveted to the baseplate for a secure fit,” as Mustang declares.

The seats are 1.5 inches (5.1 cm) lower and 14” (35.5 cm) wide, helping riders with a shorter inseam to get a solid foothold on the ground when stopped. A 9” (22.9 cm) wide passenger seat is offered optionally, and an easily removable rider backrest is also available. These Mustang seats will fit all 2004-2012 BMW R1200GS machines, but hopefully the new liquid-cooled beasts will also receive a seat upgrade.

Given the fact that the new R1200GS is leading BMW’s sales charts in the US, with around 30,000 units have been delivered in 2013 only and with even more promising perspectives for 2014, we guess Mustang should already be working on designing seats for it. No price was officially announced, but calling Mustang or emailing them should provide you with all the details.
