In 2000, the German motorcycle maker released the BMW R 900 RR Rally, BMW's first attempt to introduce a boxer engine into the world of enduro racing. It had a relative success. The prototype grabbed a respectable fourth position in the Dubai Rally in November 1999.

In the visual department, the motorcycle had standard features, such as a high-mounted front fender, a wind deflector, a single seat, a two-into-one exhaust system with an up-swept silencer mounted on the left-hand side, a single-sided swingarm, and wire-spoke wheels with off-road tires.

The bike was built around an aluminum frame with a 48 mm WP telescopic fork on the front that provided 300 mm of travel and an adjustable WP monoshock on the rear with 300 mm wheel travel, offering excellent handling capabilities.

The braking power was handled by a single 300 mm brake disc mounted on the front wheel tied to a four-piston caliper and a 285 mm disc coupled to a four-piston caliper, delivering excellent stopping power.

In the performance department, the 2000 BMW R 900 RR Rally had its soul brought to life by a 900cc four-stroke air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine that delivered an output power of 90 hp with maximum strength at 8,200 rpm.

The engine worked in tandem with a five-speed manual transmission with a dry single-plate clutch that sent the power generated by the engine to the rear end via a final shaft drive.
