As it is so often the case, motorcycle customization started as a mere hobby for Nicos Marques. It evolved into something greater over the years, though, and Nicos eventually established his own bike-modding firm in sunny Barcelona. At present, the shop going by the name of Niks Motorcycles has several employees and a lengthy portfolio of amazing projects under its belt.
They also deal with regular maintenance and restorations besides custom builds, but the latter is what we’re all here for, right? To be exact, the bike pictured in these photos is referred to as Bob Tracker, and it was put together by Nicos and his team in 2022. In their search for a suitable donor, the guys ultimately settled on a BMW R 100 R from the model-year 1994.

Of course, the machine’s old-school airhead charm had a big part to play in motivating this decision, as it was a great fit for the bobber-style transformation Niks had in mind. Their client still wished to ride two-up on occasion, though, so a bit of clever modular sorcery had to be added in order to comply with this request and the bobber design formula. Nonetheless, the Spanish experts pulled everything off spectacularly!

Motorrad’s R 100 R wasn’t just an ideal basis from a cosmetic standpoint, scoring rather highly on the mechanical side of things, as well. Its air-cooled 980cc boxer-twin is the same power unit employed by the contemporary R 100 GS, and it can unleash up to 60 ponies at 6,500 rpm. On the other hand, the engine has a very respectable 56 pound-feet (76 Nm) of low-end torque at its disposal.

Niks promptly took the German classic apart once it arrived at their garage, eliminating its stock bodywork, the subframe, and a fair chunk of other OEM bits in the process. Then, the lads turned their attention to the powertrain sector, overhauling the R 100 R’s twin-cylinder boxer with high-compression pistons from Siebenrock.

The Bing carbs received a pair of custom velocity stacks, and a rounded cover can now be found where the factory airbox had once been. At the opposite end of the combustion cycle, there’s a simple, yet stunning bespoke exhaust fashioned out of stainless-steel. The pipework terminates right ahead of the rear wheel and beneath the foot pegs, with the tips bending outward to direct heat away from the tire and the rider’s feet.

Moving on to the chassis, Niks performed a comprehensive makeover in the suspension department, so as to achieve a more suitable stance for a bobber. They lowered the forks by approximately five inches (127 mm), subsequently fitting them with progressive springs and fresh preload adjusters. In addition, a high-grade Wilbers shock absorber made its way onto the Bob Tracker’s rear end.

Although the original R 100 R wheels are still in play, they saw their rims painted black and have been rebuilt with stainless-steel spokes. Retro-style Deluxe Champion rubber from Firestone embraces both hoops, and the Brembo brakes found up north were also refurbished to ensure plentiful stopping power. The calipers got painted black to match the rims, and they are now actuated via premium brake lines and a Beringer master cylinder.

No matter how cool these mods might be, what really makes this Bavarian one-off stand out is the equipment installed up top. Center-stage, you will come across a slender gas tank that’s been manufactured from scratch, sporting BMW roundels, a Monza-style filler cap, and a custom fuel gauge on the left hand-side. The Bob Tracker gets even more alluring at the back, where the modular goodness we’ve mentioned earlier takes place.

First things first, a bobbed seat pan was attached to the frame and upholstered in high-quality brown leather. Nicos and his crew followed this up with removable subframe a tad further south, and this unit can be converted from pillion seat to luggage rack depending on the rider’s needs. The secondary saddle is cloaked in the same gorgeous upholstery used on the main one, as are the motorcycle’s new grips and foot pegs.

Niks’ artisans built a couple of bespoke fenders, as well, and they topped off the Bob Tracker’s rearmost section with a swingarm-mounted license plate holder. The said bracket also supports the LED taillight, while a vintage-looking headlamp keeps the way ahead nice and lit. Senhor Marques and his associates spared no expense in the bike’s cockpit area, either.

We’ve already mentioned the swanky leather grips earlier on, and these are borne by an aftermarket handlebar along with bar-end turn signals, glassless mirrors, and Motone switches. The blinkers and mirrors came from Motogadget, the same brand which supplied the minute speedo recessed into the headlight bucket. Last but not least, the bobbed Beemer got a befitting colorway to finish it off in style, with a superb shade of blue applied to its bodywork, frame, and swingarm.
