BMW Plans to Bring Four-Cylinder Diesels to the US

It seems that recession brought a lot of new things in America, and now it is about to bring one more. Inside Line says BMW plans to bring out the four-cylinder diesels to the US market in order to improve their vehicles’ fuel economy.

You all know about engine in the 535d and everybody appreciates its performance, but BMW’s plan is to offer that same performance in a smaller package, with lower fuel consumption.

This engine needs to match the acoustic qualities of a 6-cylinder,” Baloga said, “and it needs to match the performance, as well as performing better in terms of fuel economy and emissions. The target is to produce enough horsepower to be comparable [in performance] to our N54/N55 six-cylinder turbos,” Tom Baloga, BMW of North America’s Vice President of Engineering, said, according to BMWblog.

This means that the future four-cylinder diesels will outrun the six-cylinder ones available now. The new engines are expected to debut on the SUV line.

While the information has never been officially confirmed, Inside Line posts an interesting disclaimer on their site: “The Inside Line article never explicitly mentions turbos, but does say, “Our four-cylinder diesel will be so good that people will readily accept it as a replacement for six-cylinders. The target is to produce enough horsepower to be comparable [in performance] to our N54/N55 six-cylinder turbos.
