2011 BMW 6 Series, the Best Looking BMW in Years...

...or at least this is what the CEO of the manufacturer's North American division, Jim O’Donnell, promises in an interview with Automobile Magazine. And since best looking doesn't mean an evolution from the current design cues, the next 6er will be radically different than the current generation.

O'Donnel says the next generation 6 Series will say goodbye to the "Bangle butt" it carries and will go for a more "super sleek" look. Even if it will look more agile, the CEO says the overall dimensions of the car will remain roughly the same, bmwblog.com reported.

That's about all there is for the confirmed part of the next 6 Series. Rumors however are abundant. According to early reports, the 6 Series will receive the hardtop for the convertible version, without providing a soft-top as an option. Not because of a whim, but because the body will be designed in such a way to accommodate the hardtop.

As for the engine, there will be several exciting units getting a place under the hood. The 6 cylinder twin turbo, developing 326 hp, will power one of the entry level 6ers, with the more up-class ones likely to be propelled by a 407 hp twin-turbo V8. The engines will be offered with a choice of two transmissions, a 8 speed automatic and a 7-speed DCT.

The diesel range will be comprised of the unit that can be found today in the 635d, while a tri-turbo, 354 hp 6 cylinder unit may also be considered. Of course, BMW is planning a hybrid version of the 6 Series as well, in the shape of the 655 model.

The most likely date to witness the unveiling of the next generation 6 Series is the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, in March. Until then, details will keep on surfacing.
