BMW 5 Series GT Preps for 2009 Florida Auto Show

German carmaker BMW announced that its 5 Series GT model is getting ready to make North American public debut. The car is seen as one of the company’s highlights set to be showcased at South Florida International Auto Show between October 23 - November 1, and will go on sale this December.

However, the model’s the official media and public presentation was made in March, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. The new 5 series is a combination between the 7 series, that inspired the L-shaped taillights and the large front grille and the CS Concept, first displayed in 2007 and later in April 2008 at the New York International Auto Show.

This somehow strange combination, between a sedan and a SUV places the 5 Series GT in the Progressive Activity Sedan category. The available engine range for the new Gran Turismo includes two petrol and one diesel options.

The less powerful petrol engine is the 3.0 litre twin-turbo in-line six cylinder unit, which develops 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque, which allows the GT 335i to sprint from naught to sixty in 6.3 seconds. The maximum top speed registered for this power unit is 155 mph (250 km/h).

On the other hand, the other petrol engine unit, namely the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which provides a maximum output of 407 hp and 600 Nm of torque. This allows the 550i to sprint from naught to sixty in 5.5 seconds, and keep on accelerating until reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

On the other hand, the 3.0-liter common rail diesel unit delivers 245 hp and 540 Nm of torque and does sixty in 6.9 seconds. However, the top speed of this engine configuration is of 150 mph (240 km/h). The fuel consumption figure of this engine is 6.5 l/100 km (36.18 mpg) combined cycle.
